Cruise Report No. 2 - 17 February to 23 February 2000
Our most recent one-week cruise on the research boat Sea Nomad brought researchers and ecovolunteers from France and Switzerland toLampi and surrounding islands in order to continue the survey on wild cats.
The abundance of the Asian golden cat was verified by the local peoples. During the fruit bearing season it will be possible to see asmany as 5 or 6 feeding on the same Banyan tree.
The marbled cat probably inhabits some of the islands, but its reclusive ways make it very difficult to observe.
Interviews with Moken and Burmese hunters confirmed that hunting is still taking place in Lampi National Park. We must consider ways toraise awareness of this situation and stop what the local people consider to be their natural rights. We shall pursue this in our up-coming cruises and hope that we will be able to put forth some viable proposals to deal with thisproblem.
