Cruise Report No. 1 -  30 November to 06 December 2000

The first cruise of the 2000-2001 season brought the EcoSwiss team to the Moken village on the southern part of Lampi Island in the Andaman Sea.

There the group met with the local authorities, the village chief and secretary. The local authorities listened with interest as our team explained to them about the wild cat survey and they also allowed themselves to be interviewed. They introduced us to a local hunter who agreed to guide resident biologist into the interior of the southern part of Lampi island. Our purpose was to scout for Felines and other indigenous wildlife in their native habitat. Jungle treks and beach explorations were organized and carried out over a three day period. Special attention was given to after dusk exploration during the time when most of the animals, including wildcats, are active.

Mouse-deer, slow loris, lemur, reticulated python, vipers and a great variety of birds including sea eagles, great hornbills, collared kingfishers, reef egrets, herons, whimbrels and common terns were sighted. Some of these were captured on film by our cameramen.

A medium-small brown colored species of wildcat was spotted at the edge of the jungle near the beach. Even though local hunter said it was a golden cat, this encounter cannot be confirmed since the animal ran away before a complete species  confirmation could be made. Our collaboration with the local hunter, given the fact he is an expert and skillful naturalist and guide, permitted EcoSwiss to begin a basic dialog regarding wildlife and environmental conservation with these people.
