The archipelago of Mergui lies at the southern tip of the Indo Chinese region, where the isthmus of Kra divides it from the Sundaic Region. Flora and faunaof the two regions overlap here, making the area especially interesting to field biologists. The area has never been exploited commercially and has been closed to tourism and all other activities except for fishing, some illegal logging and poachingfor the past 50 years. These conditions have allowed the eco-systems of the islands to maintain a high level of natural bio-diversity. A wide variety of wildlife can be easily observed including hornbills, parrots, kingfishers, dolphins, sea otters, macaques, monitor lizards andpythons. The rare transition from peninsular rain forest to coastal mangrove swamps and on to the outlying islands where coral development increases the further out you go, makesthis a truly fascinating and unique region for study.
