The Sea Nomad at Pocock Island The archipelago of Mergui lies at the southern tip of the Indo Chinese region, where the isthmus of Kra divides it from the Sundaic Region. Flora and fauna of the two regions overlap here, making the area especially interesting to field biologists. The area has never been exploited commercially and has been closed to tourism and all other activities except for fishing, some illegal logging and poaching for the past 50 years. These conditions have allowed the eco-systems of the islands to maintain a high level of natural bio-diversity. A wide variety of wildlife can be easily observed including hornbills, parrots, kingfishers, dolphins, sea otters, macaques, monitor lizards and pythons. The rare transition from peninsular rain forest to coastal mangrove swamps and on to the outlying islands, where coral development increases the further out one goes, makes this a truly fascinating and unique region for study.
